Multicast Firewall Load Sharing on Checkpoint ClusterXL Firewalls with Cisco Devices

Multicast Firewall Load Sharing on Checkpoint ClusterXL Firewalls with Cisco Devices.

  1. Configure the following command on the internal router:
    •  arp 192.168.20.2 0100.5e16.0de2 arpa
  2. Configure the following commands on the internal switch where the port numbers shown below are the port numbers to which your firewall interfaces are connected:
    • mac address-table static 0100.5e16.0de2 vlan 10 interface gi1/0/2 gi1/0/3 gi1/0/4
    • no ip igmp snooping vlan 10
  3. The multicast mac address of the firewall cluster’s internal VIP (shown above in the commands) is obtained by looking at the topology information of the cluster in theSmartDashboard and clicking on the edit option for the cluster IP and then clicking on the advanced button. That should show you the mulitcast MAC address. Checkpoint has an sk technote which shows a different way of getting the MAC address using the cphaconf debug_data command on the command line. This DOES NOT work as it gives you the wrong MAC address.
  4. The same configuration commands (with the correct IP and MAC for the external cluster) are performed on the external router pointing to the external VIP:
    •  arp 192.168.15.2 0100.5e16.0de3 arpa
  5. And the same configuration command on the external switch:
    • mac address-table static 0100.5e16.0de3 vlan 20 interface gi1/0/5 gi1/0/6 gi1/0/7
    • no ip igmp snooping vlan 20

Build Your Own Cheap iSCSI SAN for ESX Server

Build Your Own Cheap iSCSI SAN for ESX Server.

Option #1 – OpenFiler

The first option I have found is OpenFiler. This is an open-source “storage management operating system”. In fact, Openfiler takes the Linux OS and makes it into a SAN controller. It can all be configured with a web browser and, even better, it is a free download. It takes about 10 minutes to install (probably much longer to actually configure). In fact, you can even download a working VMware virtual disk image of OpenFiler. It is  promoted on the VMware Virtual Appliance Marketplace but you can also download it from SourceForge.net.

Here is my Openfiler Web management interface:

SAN Melody Lite – Option #2

A company called Datacore creates a number of storage server products that create, what they call, “Server Virtualization”. Their SANMelody software can turn a Windows Server into both a Fibre Channel (FC) and iSCSI SAN Server.

VMware (finally) admits that its costs are higher than Microsoft’s

via VMware (finally) admits that its costs are higher than Microsoft’s

Recently we came across the updated VMware cost per application calculator and discovered what our customers and partners have been telling us all along – VMware vSphere 5.1 costs more than Windows Server 2012 and System Center 2012 combined. And we’re not just talking about license acquisition cost, but also the capital expenditure costs (CAPEX), including power, space, storage, and server hardware costs.

To see for yourself, plug in the following values in the calculator–

  1. Number of VMs: 100
  2. Virtualization host type: Server B
  3. Network storage type: iSCSI SAN
  4. Compare to vendor: Microsoft
  5. VMware vSphere 5.1 edition: Enterprise Plus
  6. Management deployed on physical or virtual: virtual
  7. Electricity: low
  8. Real estate: low

The cost-per-application to virtualize 100 apps using VMware vSphere 5.1 Enterprise Plus edition is 19% higher than with Microsoft Hyper-V and System Center 2012.

When you purchase Microsoft’s Windows Server 2012 and System Center 2012, you get a complete private cloud solution.   A realistic cost comparison with VMware should include VMware’s private cloud solution, introduced recently, named vCloud Suite 5.1. If you re-run the cost comparisons for 100 VMs using vCloud Suite 5.1, you’ll find that a VMware solution costs not 19% more, but around 440% more than a Microsoft solution with Windows Server 2012 and System Center 2012.

You can try the calculation here.
